چکیده

Active transport of T1+ by frog skin was compared with transport of K+ and Rb+. T1+ was transported actively (using a Na,K-ATPase) by the epithelium and the adrenaline-stimulated glands. In the epithelium, K+, T1+ and Rb+ competed for transport in the ratio 1:1.7:0.9; in the glands the ratio was 1:1:1.

Inhibition of active sodium transport in the isolated frog skin.

T HE LOW concentration of sodium inside most cells appears to result from an active outward transport of sodium (1-s). Since it is technically difficult to study active sodium transport in muscle and nerve, a simpler system in which such transport occurs may be examined with profit. It has long been known that an electrical potential difference (p.d.) may be measured across the isolated frog sk...

The Effect of Calcium on Sodium Transport by Frog Skin

Calcium added to the solution bathing the outside of isolated frog skin caused a reversible decrease in net sodium transport across the skin. At constant sodium concentration, the inhibition of transport increased with increasing calcium concentration, but approached a limiting value. This maximum degree of inhibition was found to depend on sodium concentration; sodium transport could be inhibi...

Intracellular voltage of isolated epithelia of frog skin: apical and basolateral cell punctures

Isolated epithelia of frog skin were prepared with collagenase, and the cells were punctured with intracellular microelectrodes across their apical (outer) and basolateral (inner) surfaces. Regardless of the route of cell puncture, the intracellular voltage (Vosc) in short-circuited isolated epithelia was markedly negative, averaging -70.4 mV for apical punctures and -91.6 mV for basolateral pu...

Ussing's “Little Chamber”: 60 Years+ Old and Counting

Generally, a Commentary for the Frontiers in Physiology is aimed at a recent research article that has the potential to make a major impact on a particular scientific research field. However, where would the field of epithelial ion transport physiology be without the Ussing chamber? One has to ask that question in the 100th anniversary year of the birth of the great Danish physiologist Hans Hen...

The Influence of Na Concentration on Na Transport across Frog Skin

The effects of changes in Na concentration of the bathing solutions on some transport and permeability properties of the isolated frog skin have been examined. Rate coefficients for unidirectional Na movements across the two major barriers in the skin have been estimated as functions of Na concentration. The results indicate that the "apparent Na permeability" of the outer barrier of the skin d...
